[30] Brahman by DSP | A Comeback

Image

Lyrics by :  Na Muthukumar, Thamarai, Viveka and Yugabharathi.

[1] Vodu Vodu Vodu Vodu (Vocals: Devi Sri Prasad, Chinnaponnu )

Assures you that this is indeed DSP’s album. If it was Magizhini Manimaaran for Jingucika (Veeram), here we have Chinnaponnu to give some folk-ness to the song.

Vazhkai cinema tan da, athil hero endrum neeye tan da!

The hero’s introduction song, perhaps? Listenable, but with low volume, please.

[2] Unn Kannai / Penne Nee Illamal (Vocals: Karthik, M M Manasi )

Karthik and soft-romantic song can never go wrong. Excellent as always, Karthik’s voice is freshly paired with MM Manasi’s (Stylish Tamizhachi fame) sweetly modulated voice which made the track even more pleasant. Lovable tune and I believe that the song will be bigger with the visual (which is most probably shot in Swiss/Venice as per the news).

[3] Vaanatthiley Nilavu (Vocals: Sooraj Santhosh  )

A folksy romantic melody. Sooraj Santhosh (Othakadai, Yealey Maruthu fame) has a gentle and lively voice which keeps you entertained throughout the song, infused with the foot tapping beat. I really wish he sings more Tamizh songs. At random play, it sounds like a mash-up of songs from Kutty. The song seems to be slightly lengthy; else this is a completely enjoyable song.

[4] En Uyirin Uyiraga (Vocals: Anitha, Devi Sri Prasad )

The moment the song starts, I begin to hum the tune of Feel My Love (Kutty). Too similar due to the beat and the vocals (Sagar and DSP). Somehow, DSP sounds slightly different than his usual high-pitched, voice-breaking style. Anitha seems to fit in the romance number perfectly. She adds the softness to the bold DSP’s vocal. Lovely one thou. As of now, I kept imagining this song with the visuals of Ival Dhana (Veeram).

[5] Vaada Vaada Nanba (Vocals: Andrea Jeremiah, MLR Karthikeyan  )

Sounds like a kutthu song due to the romance between Kattu Kattu (Thirupachi) and Yenna Solla Pore (Venghai). I guess even the directors are tired of presenting male-version-kuttu songs and decided to opt for the female version instead. Here we have a song with some deep advice on friendship/love/life, croon by the ever energetic Andrea Jeremiah; the biggest plus of the song. I loved how DSP decided to opt for Andrea for a complete kuthu beat song. Addictive beat. With due respect to the short and sweet rendition of MLR Karthikeyan, the track would have been a fresh start if the male’s rendition was limited to the middle and end of the song rather than including it in the beginning itself and making it sound very very familiar even at the first listen.

One little thing that kept me wondering was, how would some of the voices used in the song would suit Sasikumar, whom we had always seen in village-themed movies, speaking the local dialect. But, of course his avatar as the city guy is pretty good based on the teaser and trailer.  And the beautiful Lavanya Tripathi (Andala Rakshasi fame) marks her debut in Tamizh in Brahman.  After some back to back release of DSP’s hyper-folksy-loud albums, it is really good to listen to an album which is well balanced and most importantly, less loud from him. As much as I love soft romantic melodies, I tend to get tired of the similar honey-dipped voices roping the mandatory melodies of each movie, one after another. A variation would definitely be awesome and DSP had made the right choice of vocals in this one album, IMHO. (And somehow, when I saw the tracklist of the audio and the vocals, I felt a sting of Ghibran-ness and D.Imman-ness. Can’t help it! ). A mash-up of Venghai, Kutty and Veeram. A well-balanced album, DSP is back on track.

p/s : Can someone please give a soft-romantic duet number for Sooraj Santhosh? He would sound magical, I believe.

My pick : Unn Kannai Penne Nee Illamal, Vannathile Nilavu, Vaada Vaada Nanba.

[25] Veeram by Devi Sri Prasad | Idle

Image

1. Nallavannu Solvanga (Singer : DSP | Lyrics : Vivega)

This was the song which was featured earlier in the 2nd teaser of Veeram (Can be viewed here), whereby the small piece of the song was enough to pump up the anticipation among Ajith’s fans. Crooned by none other than the music director himself, the song is very DSP-ish. As a stand alone song, it does not portray any Ajith-ism, but it does remind me of Attagasam songs. The voice over of Ajith in the 2nd half of the song, pretty much stressed that it is indeed Ajith’s introduction song. The beat and the lyrics hint that the song will feature Ajith together with his (4) brothers, of course in the velle vetti sattai. To end the song with the much popularized dialogue from the 2nd teaser, ‘Enna Naan Solrathu?” is a positive touch. Catchy, but doesn’t stay with you longer.

2. Ivaldhaana (Singers : Sagar, Shreya Ghoshal | Lyrics : Vivega)

A soft melody which will be featuring Ajith and Tamannaah. Shreya Goshal’s templatized melody this is, honeyed voice as always but mostly repetitive as her previous songs. But, of course her voice easily reminds me of Tamannaah, so this track will most probably work pleasantly with the visuals I hope. Sagar’s portion is brief and enjoyable, yet kept me wondering whether it will suit the salt-and-pepper version of Ajith. It has a catchy tune which is pleasing but make sure to listen to this song in low volume to feel the loveliness of the voices. Not sure either 4.15 minute is indeed long or the song really makes you feel so. There’s a slight touch of Orey Oru (Venghai) due to the modulation of the voices.

3. Thangamey (Singers : Adnan Sami, Priyadarshini | Lyrics : Vivega)

Sung by Adnan Sami, this was one of the most expected songs of the film. It is good to listen to Adnan Sami in Tamizh after a long gap, acceptable pronunciation of Tamizh but sadly enough, the song does not live up to the expectation. However, Priyadarshini’s piercing voice is a big plus for the song. Huge similarities with Kathadi Polle (Maayavi), Gundu Mangga (Sachien), Kattu Kattu (Thirupachi) and Dheenam Dheenam (Venghai). Honestly, with due respect to his talent, I was glad that Baba Sehgal was not part of this track or else it would have been much more similar with DSP’s previous works.

4. Jing Chakan (Singers : Pushpavanam Kuppusamy, Magizhini Manimaran | Lyrics : Vivega)

Fast beat folksy song, perfectly complimented by Pushpavanam Kuppusamy and Magizhini Manimaran (Soi Soi fame). We can hear Vaale Vaale (Singam 2) and Hey Rama Rama (Villu) every here and there. Magizhini’s modulation is in the fine line between hardcore kutthu song and soft folk song, which is brilliant as it saved the song from being just another village, heavy beat faux folk. Kevvu Keka-ish yet apt for the village based film.

5. Ratha Gaja (Singers : Anand, Koushik, Deepak, Jagadish | Lyrics : Vivega)

Being the Veeram theme song, the lyrics are penned by Vivega to suit the title and the man of the film himself. Mass and powerful, a definite favorite of Ajith’s fans. Monotonous yet the vocals managed to provide the much needed impact for the film. This theme was unveiled partially in the 1st teaser of Veeram which can be viewed here.

My pick : Nallavannu Solvanga and Ivaldhaana. Listenable, in low volume of course.

“Sattaiyila rendu button avunthu irukum,

Ooril sandai-na engaloda sound-du irukkum,

Ethiriyoda odambulathaan kaayam irukkum,

Ada eppavumey enga pakkam niyayam irukkum.”

The above lyrics pretty much summarized the theme of the film. Spoiler? Let’s wait till Ponggal 2014.

Love, SJT.
